A 2.6% processing fee applies to all credit card payments. *The credit card company charges the fee; the Town does not impose it.
Veteran Exemption:
A veteran who served during a recognized war period and is 62 years or older; or, is receiving 100% disability as a Veteran; or, became 100% disabled while serving, is eligible for an exemption of $6,000 from the just value of their home.
Paraplegic Veteran:
A veteran who received a federal grant for a specially adapted housing unit is eligible for an exemption of $50,000 from the just value of their home.
Homestead Exemption:
This program provides a measure of property tax relief for certain individuals that have owned homestead property in Maine for at least 12 months and make the property they occupy on April 1 their permanent residence. Eligible property owners receive an exemption of $25,000 from the just value of their home.
Blind Exemption:
An individual who is determined to be legally blind is eligible to receive an exemption of $4,000 from the just value of their home.
Abatement:
Submit this application to your municipal assessor within 185 days of commitment. Commitment is the date when the municipal tax collector receives the tax files for the year. This date is usually near the date when the tax bills are sent out. Check with your municipal assessor to find out the exact commitment date. An abatement request is not a guarantee of reduced tax. By law, a taxpayer must prove that the actual value of their property is lower than the municipal assessment. Proof may include, for example, documentation of recent sales of similar property or a significant error on the taxpayer's property record card.
Tax Club:
The Tax Club Program allows residential property owners to pay their real estate property taxes over the course of the year through a payment book that will be issued by the tax collector's office once an application has been completed. The Tax Club will allow a property owner's tax bill to be evenly divided over a ten month period beginning August 15th with the final payment due on May 15th of the fiscal year.
